Coping Skills

Whether you like it or not, stress is a part of life. It can leave us feeling anxious and irritable, and can have a negative effect on how we deal with others and how we feel about ourselves. If it is not dealt with, it can wear the sufferer down and lead to exhaustion. Stress related illnesses include heart disease, high blood pressure and migraine headaches. The good news is that it can be managed.

  • Identify the stressor. What exactly is causing the stress? Can you avoid it? Work to manage this stress.
  • Manage your time. Make a schedule and stick to it. Be sure to include some R & Rtime to recharge.
  • Prioitize. Lists of things to do can seem endless, but if you number them from most important (needs to be done asap) down to 'it can be done tomorrow or later in the week', it can help to see things in the big picture.
  • Redirect your energy. When you are stressed, you have some extra energy that is built up. You can burn this off with physical activity. It not only keeps you fit, but can relax your mind.
  • Talk it out. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Talk with someone you trust. It never hurts to get an outsiders opinion or advice.
  • Relax. Relaxation exercises and sleep are very important in a teenagers life. Are you getting enough?

  • Positive Self Talk
